Company Profile

Tropical Seed Ltd. is a private owned company, situated in Siguatepeque, Honduras, Central America.

The official name of the company is: Semillas Tropicales, S. de R. L. (SETRO) that means Tropical Seeds. Its current owner, Oscar Ochoa Mendoza, established SETRO in 1992 following the new policy of the Honduran government concerning the forestry sector.

The core-business of SETRO is producing and selling seeds from moderate to tropical climate in the following field:

  • Nitrogen fixing seed species
  • Forage seed species
  • Seeds for Agroforestry
  • Seed species of Ornamentals tree  
  • Tropical and temperate Coniferous seed  
  • Seeds for fast growing trees
  • Seeds for firewood
  • Tropical broadleaf seed species  

SETRO sells also additional products for other silviculture activities such as:

  • inoculates for tropical seeds  
  • products for nurseries  

SETRO's market consists of governmental and non-governmental organizations, rural and development organisations as well as private companies all over the world. Further more SETRO has its own laboratory, cold store, database and library to be able to assist with any technical information to our clients anytime.

To optimize its quality and knowledge SETRO is co-operating with different organizations like:

  • Comemrcial Seed Annalists Association of Canada (CSAAC) - Canada.
  • International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) - Switzerland.
  • Honduran Forestry Administration. (I.C.F).  
  • Fundación para Educación Ecológica (EDUECO) - Honduras.

Market

The field of action are the seeds in general (export and import) with special emphasis on seed timber: hardwoods and conifers, seeds of fruit trees, fodder, agroforestry, nitrogen fixing, fuel and energy, of various origins, both tropical ecological , sub-tropical and temperate climates in the world.

Dispondo own facilities such as processing area, modern office, laboratory, conference room, reception area, cold storage and dry, computer system, internet and library for specialist consultation.

 
National and International Liaison

We serve as multi-functional liaison to other related institutions dedicated to the reforestation and care of trees. We are part of several networks and cooperation agencies in seeds as CSAAC of Canada; ISTA Zurich, Switzerland; REMSEFOR of Central America, Honduras CONSEFORH-ODA, the State Forestry Administration, Family Trees and Trees for the Future (TFTF) from USA.

 
Work Field

We support reforestation national and international Examples of different Kind of projects we supply are: commercial wood production, watershed protection, soil improvement, anti-erosion projects and all kind of small ruraland social projects to raise the standard of living by planting trees and teaching the people how to be responsible for their environment.

 
Social Impact

The collection and processing of the seed takes place in the country-side by local people. In this way SETRO contributes to the employment generation and the integration of the women to the labor force.

The labour is paid accoding there capacity in all cases more than the minimum wage. SETRO is an equal right company.
