Seed Collection

The seeds supplied by SETRO are classified according to their genetic type in 6 categories:

General Collection / Source Identified

recolecion Seeds are collected from selected trees in the field because they have desirable features. The place or region of origin is more or less the same ecological characteristics. These seeds are especially suitable for native species.

Selected trees

recolecion2 Seeds are collected from preselected and marked trees with desirable characteristics. These seeds are especially suitable for high value indigenous species. (Eg tecunumanii Pinus, Pinus caribaea, Cedrela odorata, Ochroma lagopus, etc..)

Experimental plots

recolecion3 The seeds of this category are sometimes harvested plots. Usually they are new or alien species introduced in the experiments. These plots provide a temporary source of seeds and supply is limited. To collect this material much care is taken to ensure genetic purity and safety of the material is legitimately good.

Seedling stand

recolecion4 The seeds are harvested from natural forests or plantations managed for this purpose. Trees are selected for their high phenotypic and genetic and regarded as a good source of quality seeds.

Seed Orchard

recolecion5 The seeds are harvested from plantations established for seed orchard with trees an origin and a very high quality. Plantations for this purpose are considered a good source. Due to the very high costs of establishment and maintenance, higher seed quality, the prices of these seeds are higher.

Clonal garden

recolecion6 The seeds are harvested from plantations with selected clones desirable characteristics. Seed production is approximately clones. 10-15% higher compared with gardening seeds. Due to the high costs of establishment, maintenance and superior seed quality, the prices of these seeds are higher.
